St. Ego, previously called Diego "Ego" Darning, founded the Umbris Church alongside two other disciples; Cyfrin Selvage and Dmitri Turner. He was a manipulative, misled leader, claiming to know the answers to questions lost to Skirven since the beginning of time. He insisted the Puppeteer was a savior instead of a plague; if it wasn't for It's intervention, shadows would attack the citizens of Skirven at will.

Therefore, it was something to be worshipped.

Ego believed that Skirvenians were impure, sewn to the creatures they called shadows. He cut his own free of the Puppeteer, and the thing sprung out of the ground and dragged him up to its home realm alongside it.

Ego's mortal body was completely destroyed, torn apart by what used to be his shadow. He was stitched back together by the Puppeteer, as a token of gratitude for the Church's worship. All that remained was his skin and bones—his flesh and innards were replaced with a hivemind of fallen Skirvenian souls.

He seeks to find a vessel; a mortal creature who lacks a shadow, so he may sew his own to an anchor.

He was forgotten by the members of his church; Cyfrin, one of the members of his close circle, took over as leader once he died. Cyfrin was opposed to most of Ego’s beliefs, and their tapestries (the holy material of the Umbris Church) erase him entirely.

Ego, when he was human, recorded Stage creatures in a journal that he hid from the public. It was kept a secret by later bishop Edwin Skurani.

Ego's consciousness was summoned back to the Mortal Plane by a talented, crazed ex-priest named Sorion Spool.

Ego runs on hatred; for Cyfrin and the members of his church after he was forgotten. He wishes to undo the Seam and regain his followers.
