Hana‘s mother was a Kitsune who married a rice farmer. However, she never told her husband that she was a Kitsune. When the fact was revealed, her husband called her disgusting and left her and her child (Hana) forever.
Ever since, Hana’s mother was ashamed of their Kitsuné heritage. She told Hana that Kitsune were disgusting, vile, creatures. Hana, wanting to become a powerful Kitsune superhero, did not take this well. And despite what her mother told her, Hana continued to practice transforming into a fox, which her mother scolded her for, insisting that Hana was too stupid to be a Kitsune.

Hana took this criticism to heart, repressing her Kitsune features at school. She takes out her self hatred on those she finds inferior (like Avery) by calling them stupid.… despite, y’know, being in a class for children who were falling behind the other children.
