As many heroes do, Space Girl just showed up one day. Some street level villains were making an escape from a bank they robbed, when suddenly their car started going up instead of forward. A girl with an astronaut helmet was hovering outside the car, even as it got 30ft above the pavement. The villains tried to escape, but they found the doors were stuck to the car, unmoving despite their best efforts. Space Girl then dragged the car through the air all the way to the police station, and that was her debut. 
Ever since, she's been a mystery in the hero community. Even more strict about keeping her identity a secret than most, she rarely reveals anything about herself. Despite this, she is quite the cheery hero. Always cracking jokes in the middle of a fight, a smile always audible in her voice.
Her powers seem to be gravity based. With a touch, she can change the strength and direction of an object's gravity, often launching her opponents into walls or the ceiling. She can also fly by using this power on herself, make an object pull things in, and, most notably, amplify her powers to huge levels, which she does sparingly, as it exhausts her.
