There was a stubborn, rhythmic quality to Father Abioye's goodness. Whether he was settling a heated dispute between neighbors on the church steps or comforting a grieving widow, he operated under the simple clarity: things would be better, because he would help make them so. To talk to him was to feel your own anxieties go quiet and to be reassured that everything will be okay.

But small town Northgate is a gossipy place where 'outsider' is a permanent title, and a few folks watch him closely - waiting for the mask of the saint to slip, eager to see the flawed, tired man they were certain lived beneath the collar.
