Rainie Miller is the protagonist of both "Rainie and the Fair Folk" and "Faerie High" (with Faerie High being an AU of R&tFF... depending on the direction I take lol).
In both stories, Rainie is a 15-year-old girl who has just moved to a small New England town called Fairwood, and accidentally stumbles upon a mysterious glowing crown. The crown calls to her, and when she puts it on, she becomes the next Fairy Queen, protector of realm of Faerie and head of the Seelie Court. This sends to the fairy world into upheaval, because a human has never taken up the sacred mantle. How could a human handle such a role without knowing any magic?
In the Faerie High continuity, Headmistress Titania (a former Fairy Queen) senses that the crown has called to another. When she realizes the new Queen is a human, she worries that the Unseelie Queen will strike and take the crown for herself because it's in such a vulnerable position. To protect Rainie, she whisks her away to Faerie High, where she can secretly train her and hone her magical abilities.
In the R&tFF continuity, Rainie remains in the human world but trains with a fairy mentor in the hidden fae realm. Now that the crown is in the hands of not only an amateur, but a human, the Unseelie Queen has the perfect opportunity to strike and seize the crown for herself. Rainie must handle the Unseelie conspiracy rapidly unraveling around her while facing immense scrutiny from fairykind and trying to master her new magical abilities.
In both versions, she befriends Lachlan McCairn, a quiet, reserved fairy boy who feels like an outcast in any group he's in, human or fairy. He acts as her guide to the magical world, introducing her to its rules and dangers. As they train together, they form a strong bond, which might blossom into something more...
