Khoran is an Ifrit Fetchling, and Midilyen's older brother. Their parents are a fetchling woman and an azer man who met in the mountains - each having left their original plane - then settled into a lakeside fishing village to raise their children after she became pregnant with their son.

Growing up in the town, the two children became friends with five other kids about their ages, where Khoran was the oldest and most responsible. He sported a dull bronze sword made for him by his father for his 10th birthday. Being extremely shy, Midilyen preferred sticking close to her brother. A while after the friends separated to find their futures, including Khoran himself, who left to perform hard labor in a neighboring country as he'd struggled to take up his father's blacksmithing business. When the Fetchling siblings' Azer father died, and with the newly built palace causing costs to skyrocket, their mother's rope-weaving wasn't enough for them to get by.

Khoran vowed to help his family overcome their struggles, and returned to the country he'd been working in, devoting himself to impressing his superiors. He was promoted to guard work at a border city on the edge of a frozen, lawless wasteland overrun by bandits. It didn't take him long to learn that by turning a blind eye to the least dangerous of his duties, the bribes he received helped cover costs back home. One day, his sister visited, wanting to know where the sudden increase in money was coming from. They got in an altercation and he was late to realize a deal going wrong nearby. A shot was fired, and he moved in front of Midi to protect her from additional collateral damage, losing his life to keep her safe.
